I was going for sardonic I got mealy mouthed
I knew I was in trouble as soon as it came out

It came around to bite me like I knew it would
I was standing on a hilltop yelling "It's still good!"
Thinking maybe I need somebody new to be scared of

I never really stand a chance
I've got one of those faces you can see through
Concentrating on the task at hand
Every pilot needs a ground crew
I'm staggered that I stumbled through so far
The hidden currents and the shifting sand
I never would've guessed the final straw
The sad-eyed lady of the Poundland

An accidental elbow and some fumbled change
A "come on let me help you" an averted gaze
It's hardly an emotional affair but
After marching red-eyed all the way back home
To spend the evening wordless in the same cold room
I was thinking "I need somebody new to be scared of"

It's the same thing every time
"Do you think that maybe crossed a line?"
I'm not sure that I have a line

I'm never really one to push my luck
I started tugging at the threads I never touch
I was only supposed to blow the bloody doors off
Now I'm finding places no one knows my face
And only drinking to excess in moderation
Looking out for somebody new to be scared of
